ONE DIED IN ACCIDENT NEAR NAKASHIPARA

Sariful Islam, a thirteen years old boy was crushed to death by a speeding tractor (WB-51/7371) following the driver of the vehicle lost control on Thursday afternoon close to Birpur panchayet office on NH-34. The accident occurred when the tractor loaded with bricks recklessly moving ignoring the rush on the road during the afternoon. Locals alleged that small cars, tractors often run recklessly posing dangers to the pedestrians. DAUGHTER ACCUSED FATHER OF KIDNAPING HUSBAND WITH A MURDER MOTIVE

Krishnaganjue, Dec.29: An elderly man was accused of kidnapping his son in law with a murder motive.

A complaint in this regard was lodged by her daughter Rekha Mandal at Krishnaganjue police station on Monday following son in law Subrata Mandal was rescued by the police from a hideout in Bhimpur village.

Police has arrested three youths including driver of the vehicle in which the son in law was allegedly kidnapped. Police has initiated an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, accused father, Ranjit Chaudhuri went on absconding.

In her complaint Rekha Mandal has alleged that her father Ranjit Chaudhuri, who could not accept her marriage with Subrata kidnapped him when they came to her paternal house in Durgapur village on Sunday after a gap of three years.

She alleged three persons kidnapped her husband at gun point and fled in a car. Police later rescued him and arrested Nakul Mandal, Swapan Mandal and driver of the car Kartick Biswas.

Rekha said: “My father made my life miserable since I got married with Subrata against his wish.” “Earlier he slapped a case of kidnapping against my husband. However, the court set him free and for the last three years we have been staying in Dumdum, she added.

Nevertheless, her father did not give up his revenge plan. Rekha said: “On several occasions he threatened to kill my husband despite staying far away from his”, she alleged further.

BANDH IN SANTIPUR PASSED OFF PEACEFULLY EXCEPT SOME STRAY INCIDENTS

Police patrolling in Malancha area of Santipur on Monday morning following two groups clashed in the area during a bandh called by the Congress in protest against heinous attack on the vice chairman of the local civic body and senior party lear Abdus Salam Karikar late on Sunday evening. Six persons including brother in law of the victim identified as Amir Khan, a CPI(M) activist, were arrested in connection with involvement in the attack. FATAL ATTACK ON VICE CHAIRMAN OF SANTIPUR CIVIC BODY, CONGRESS CALLED 24 HOURS STRIKE IN SANTIPUR

Santipur, Dec.27: In a gruesome attack allegedly carried out by armed CPI (M) supporters senior Congress leader and vice chairman of Santipur Municipality Abdus Salam Karikar (alias Salam) was seriously injured late on Sunday evening in Santipur following announcement of results of a school managing body. Another party leader Tarun Bhattacharjee, who was accompanying him, was also seriously injured in the attack. The two were rushed to Santipur state general hospital. However, he was shifted to SSKM hospital in Kolkata following his condition deteriorated.

The District Congress leadership has called 24 hours Santipur bnadh condemning the incident. District Congress Chief Sankar Singh has demanded immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the heinous attack.

The incident occurred on the Malancha Street when Mr. Karikar was returning home along with some party activists.

Sahidul Karikar, brother of the vice chairman has lodged a complaint at Santipur police station. However, till report last came in no one has been arrested.

Local sources said at about 7.45 PM a group of CPI (M) supporters armed with sticks and sharp weapons chased Mr.Karikar and others. After intercepting him the assailants allegedly beaten up him and then tried to hack him with sharp weapon. However, the sharp weapon hit Mr. Karikar’s head. Party activist Tarun Bhattacharjee sustained serious injury of sharp weapon on his as he tried to save him. Locals soon rushed to rescue them following Mr. Bhattacharjee raised an alarm.

They were rushed to Santipur state general hospital where Mr.Karikar was given 19 stitches for his head injury.

Congress MLA from Santipur and local civic body chief Ajoy De has alleged that the attack as a planed one to kill Mr.Karikar. ‘The CPI (M) leaders lost their cool being failed to retain power at the local school body’, he alleged further. However, CPI (M) leadership has refuted the allegation.

Local sources also claimed that the incident is a immediate fallout of the school body election results in which guardians’ panel close to CPI (M) lost to retain power as it could bagged only 3 seats while the rest won by the combined opposition of Congress and Trinamul Congress.

Krishnanagar/Santipur, Dec. 27: The embarrassment continued for CPI(M) as the guardians’ panel with close allegiance to the party defeated in two school body school in the district, while in another it failed to retain power making the tally equal with the opposition.

In the result announced in the school managing body election for Aranghata Girls’ school the guardians’ panel close to Trinamul Congress won uncontested as the leftist failed even to field candidates. The pro change panel won all the six seats uncontested for which the elections were scheduled to be held.

In Taraknagar Ma Maharani School in Krishnanagaj block, the pro change guardian’ panel won in four seats while the rest two seats were bagged by the left panel. The pro change candidates with allegiance to Trinamul Congress lost the two seats by a slender margin of just 2 votes and 22 votes .

The most embarrassing result was, however, in Malancha High school in Santipur where the party’s close panel failed to retain power as they could manage only three seats. The candidates close to Congress one in one and the other two went to candidates close to Trinamul Congress.

The results, however, invite tension in the area as local congress leader and vice chairman of Santipur municipality Abdus Salam Karikar and another party worker were allegedly attacked by armed CPI(M) supporters following the announcement of the results,.

DEATH TOLL INCREASED IN KOTA, KINS TURNED RESTLESS IN TEHATTA

Tehatta/Krishnanagar, Dec. 27: Darkness zoomed in on the face of 27 years old Mungli Biwi in Balarampur-Haripur village in Tehatta on Sunday evening. Looking ahead with a somber vacant impression she had been waiting silently sitting on the edge of the thatched verandah close to the dingy lane in the Haripur village. Ever since the news of the bridge collapse in Kota arrived in the non-descriptive village in Tehatta, Mungli became restless. Embracing her 2 years old thalassemic son Soumyajit she was wiping her tears. Her husband Subodh Pahari, a masonry help who went to Kota lost life in the bridge collapse incident there.

Her neighbors informed that a compulsion to earn more for treatment of the ailing son drove Subodh to respond to the call of Gokul Mandal, labour contractor to join the bridge construction work in Kota in Rajasthan.

But, fate struck hard on Thursday night when Subodh had fallen victim to the accident.

There are many others like Subodh, who leaving the traditional job as farm hand went to Kota with an aim to earn more. Nevertheless, Subodh’s story is little different from them all.

In absence of Subodh, her wife Mungli is now worried to keep her thalassemic son alive. She murmured: “He requires blood transfusion at least twice in every month, which would now be quite impossible task for me to arrange.”

Knowing about the child DM Nadia Onkar Singh Meena has assured help to the family. The district administration would extend all possible support to the woman and her child, he said.

Meanwhile, toll of the victims in the bridge collapse incident into river Chambal in Kota in Rajasthan has increased. As per the information provided by the Kota district administration to Nadia district authorities, since Saturday night eight more bodies were identified who hailed from Nadia district. With the fresh recovery of eight bodies from the debris of the collapsed under construction bridge, the death toll from Nadia raised to 14.

The eight bodies identified on Sunday were Abdus Salam Biswas, 30 (Mubarakpur-Haripur), Buddhiswar Mandal (Gopalpur-Tehatta), SMK Miyan,20 (Garbhanga-Thanarpara), Sadhan Biswas (Balarampur-Karuigachi/Tehatta), Ashish Mandal, 19 (Gopalpur-Tehatta), Gokul Mandal, 54 (Mubarakpur), Subodh Pahari, 25 (Balarampur)and Sariful Sheikh (Haripur).

Earlier on Friday six bodies were recovered and identified. So far 17 persons from West Bengal died in the accident of which 14 hailed from Nadia. The two others were hailed from Moinaguri in Jalpaiguri, Sagardweep in Bardhaman and Dehri in South 24-Parganas.

DM Nadia Onkar Singh Meena said: “According to information communicated by the Kota district administration post mortem of all the bodies identified have already been done and handed over to next to kin of the victims.” The company for which they were working has been directed to arrange transportation of the bodies, he added.

The bodies are likely to start arriving by train from Monday evening, family sources of a victim said in Tehatta.

Meanwhile, the villagers turned restless in the area from where the victims went to Kota to work as masonry help. The officials from local administration rushed to persuade them with help. But, that seemed not to be enough to satisfy them.

As per the report of the United Nation's International Labor Organisation an estimated 50,000 people die every year from work-related causes, although the Government of India do not maintain any record of figure of such occupational accidents.

BODY OF SIX FROM NADIA DIED IN KOTA BRIDGE COLLAPSE IDENTIFIED, TWO STILL MISSING

Krishnanagar/Kolkata, Dec.26: Body of the six victims from Nadia out of 45 who died when a bridge over River Chambal collapsed in Kota district of Rajasthan on Thursday would likely to arrive in Tehatta on Monday. At least twenty masonry help from different villages under Tehatta Sub Division in Nadia went to Kota being engaged by a contractor to work in construction project of a bridge being constructed as a part of the proposed East-West Corridor on National Highway No. 76.

As per the reports available with the Nadia district administration at least eight masonry workers engaged in construction of the bridge were fell victim in the accident. However, till report last came in bodies of six victims were recovered, while two remained missing.

Earlier the laborers fell into the water late Thursday when the bridge, on which they were working gave way over the Chambal River. According to police report two South Korea's Hyundai Engineering and Gammon India were jointly constructing the bridge. Meanwhile, police has arrested two senior project manager of the Hyundai. The Kunhari police in Kota has initiated a case against the two under Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) of Indian Penal Code.

Meanwhile, according to information provided by the Kota district administration to the Nadia district authorities the six victims were identified as Subir Biswas (Mathapara/Nandanpur), Babul Mandal (Mubarakpur/Haripur-Chhitka),Somesh Roy (Tinga-Nandanpur), Anupam Biswas (Mubarakpur colony-Haripur), Tapan Biswas (Balarampur korogachhi), Bishnu Biswas (Betai Nutan para). The two persons who are still missing reported as Sadhan Biswas (Balarampur) and Ashish Mandal (Gopalpur)

Soon after the report of the accident arrived at the district head quarter, Nadia District Magistrate Onkar Sing Meena made contact with his counterpart in Kota T. Ravikant. He has appraised that post mortem of the six bodies have already been done and arrangement for sending the bodies are being made by train by the company officials, Mr. Meena added. Meanwhile, the Rajasthan Government announced a compensation of Rs. 2,00, 000 to each of the victims, which will be paid to the nearest kin of the deceased to whom the body will also be handed over.

Mr.Meena said: “We are in touch with the Kota administration and any cooperation required would be extended to the family members of the victims."

Meanwhile, a pall of gloom has descended in Mobarakpur, Balarampur, Haripur, Kanainagar area from where the masonry workers went to work.

YOUTH MURDERED OVER PROPERTY DISPUTE WITH BROTHER

Krishnanagar, Dec. 25: A dispute over property with brother claimed life of a youth in Krishnanagar late on Friday evening.

Asit Dutta, 41, a generator operator was died at Kathuriapara in Krishnanagar following unidentified assailants allegedly appointed by his brother, hurled bomb at him. The deceased was a resident of Petnipara. Police arrested one of the assailants as well as the accused brother of the deceased.

Sources said, the incident occurred at arount 9.10 PM when the victim was discussing about the property dispute with Swapan Banerjee, a law clerk at the latter's residence in the locality. The bombs hit the victim on his head leaving him dead on the spot.

Alert locals soon rushed to the spot and nabbed one of the culprits. During interrogation the assailant revealed that he along with three others were appointed by the victim's brother to settle the property score with him.

However, the police officials refused to disclose the name and other details of the assailants.

HOUSEWIFE INJURED IN ROW OVER LAND

Majdia, Dec. 25: A housewife sustained serious injuries following she was attacked with sharp weapon by one of his neighbours during a row over land in Daspara village in Majdia late on Friday afternoon.

The woman, identified as Atasi Das, was admitted to Krishnaganj block hospital.

Meanwhile, a section of villagers in a bid to take revenge attacked Haran Halder and his family members, who allegedly attacked the woman earlier. Sources said, the villagers have tried to demolish Haran's residence and even allegedly set it on fire. A police team later rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Till report last came in no person was arrested.

Sources said, contention broke out between the Debu Das and Haran Mandal - two neighbours about a piece of land which earlier Debu mortgaged to Haran for some money. A few days before Debu refunded the amount to get the land returned. But, Haran refused. This developed into a violent contention as two families have been fighting for past few days.

On Friday afternoon fresh trohble began when Haran lost his cool and attacked Debu's wife Atasi with a sharp weapon and hacked her.

YOUTH KILLED IN CHAPRA

Chapra, Dec. 25: Naskar Sheikh, 40, a dreaded criminal was hacked to death by unidentified assailants in Gokhurapota village under Chapra police station on Friday morning. According to police sources he was wanted in many cases. The deceases was actually a resident of Dompukur village under the same police station. Sources said, the incident occurred at around 7 am when the deceased arrived at the Gokhurapota village. A gang of about four armed youths hurled bombs at him. In an attempt to escape the bid on life, he entered a bamboo orchard owned by local panchayet member Helena Biwi. But, the assailants followed him there and hacked him brutally on the spot. Birnagar, Dec.24: A fake doctor in Birnagar gives the police a slip on Thursday enjoying their insensitivity to act with alacrity.

Samar Kumar Majumdar, the accused fake doctor, locally known as “computer doctor’, has been running a his private chamber attached to his residence in Birnagar Khanpara under Taherpur police station using a registration number (6606) which was issued during 1928 by Indian Medical Council to Dr. Sailesh Nath Roy.

The fake doctor who owns a MD degree in AMS (Alternative Medicine Service) escaped from his chamber with the tacit support of the police when Sukanta Majumdar, one of his patients challenged him about his credentials on Thursday afternoon.

Later Mr. Majumdar lodged a complaint (238 of 24-12-2009) against the doctor at the Taherpur police station under section 419 (cheating by personation), 468 (forgery for cheating), 469 (forgery for purpose of harming reputation) of Indian Penal Cose (IPC). However, till late in the evening the police could not find him out. Meanwhile, the sleuths have sealed the chamber of the fake doctor on the instruction of SP Nadia Champak Bhattacharjee following he was appraised about the incident by some media persons.

Complaint patient Mr. Majumdar said: “Doubts developed in my mind following me found him snapping conjured photographs of abdomen to mislead me about abdominal troubles.” He suspects that the ‘doctor’ has many filed photographs of abdominal problems which he shows to the patients to create an impression of the exact nature of the problem the patient has been suffering from. In fact, this made to be known in the locality as “Computer Doctor”.

The most horrible fact is that despite being an AMS practitioner he often prescribed schedule “H” drugs for which he is not empowered. Such schedule H drugs can only be prescribed by the Registered Medical Practitioners.

Eminent pharmacologist Dr. Swapan Jana has alleged that wrong policy adopted by the state government virtually encouraging such fake doctors to play with human lives.

Earlier following he was challenged, the accused doctor rushed inside his residence putting his mother and wife ahead as shield. Meanwhile, police arrived at the spot. However, they did not bother to cordon off the residential premise of the doctor. As a result, the fake doctor slipped out of the police hand. The dumbfounded cops realized the truth much later.

In last week in a similar incident another doctor who claimed to be attached to a famous private city hospital also escaped in a similar fashion from the police clutches. The said doctor was also accused of using the registration number of another practicing doctor.

Ranaghat, Dec.24: Barely within a week was a businessman murdered inside his office, armed assailants made an attempt on life of another businessman late on Wednesday night in Ranaghat. Goutam Bhowmik, a wholesaler of consumer goods, who stays in Chunuripara, however, become lucky enough as despite sustaining serious injuries made by sharp weapon, he survived.

The incident shocked the businessman fraternity in Ranaghat, who has set a deadline of 72 hours for the police to arrest the assailants. The traders have called a bandh in Ranaghat for the said duration. However, following a late evening meeting they have made an exemption on the bandh only for the Friday due to Christmas celebration.

Police sources said, a gang of about four armed youth attacked victim Goutam Bhowmik late on Wednesday night when he was locking the main entrance of his residence premises in Chunuripara area after unloading goods from a vehicle. The assailants first shot at him from close range. Nevertheless, it missed Mr. Bhowmik. Later they overpowered him and started hacking randomly with sharp weapon. However, he raised an alarm on which his wife rushed to rescue him. The assailants escaped from the spot leaving him seriously injured. He was soon rushed to Ranaghat hospital in a profusely bleeding state with serious head injuries.

Hospital sources said that the victim sustained serious head injuries by sharp weapon.

Later police rushed to the hospital. The Ranaghat police has initiated a case on the basis of complaint lodged by the victim’s family. However, till report last came in no one was arrested. Police sources claimed that old rivalry with the trader led the attack.

Senior Trinamul Congress leader Naresh Chaki has alleged antisocial have unleashed a reign of terror in Ranaghat while the police have been mysterious remain inactive.

Ranaghat civic body Chief Partha Chatterjee also alleged that despite assuring to arrest the culprits involved in the trader Ratan Ghosh murder, the police so far could do nothing. He also alleged that a section of police officials virtually have been encouraging the criminal activities in the town making nexus with the antisocial.

Meanwhile, Superintendant of Police Champak Bhattacharjee would visit Ranaghat in connection with investigation of the incident. He would also like to meet the businessmen on the issue. The traders’ body, meanwhile, decided to stall the normal life in the town unless the culprits are arrested and the law and order situation is developed.

Debagram, Dec. 23: The 137 tiny students of Saroj Nalini Das Primary School of 'Office Bagan Para' under Kaliganj block have learnt to study closing their nostrils with their finger tips. The reason – the obnoxious reek that emits from a public urinal attached to the school that made their life miserable. If this is not enough – there are more to horrify you. Owing to absence of any soak, urine flow close to the kitchen of the school where mid day meal is prepared for the students. In fact, the kitchen and the urinal share a common wall.

If you feel that these are enough to get a tiny student fell ill, you are probably wrong. Because, the local administration feel that the children has enough resistance power and have learnt to survive and study under such circumstance. At least, despite repeated appeal by the school authorities, the lackadaisical approach of the local administration to remove the urinal proved so.

It was during 2005 the trouble began for the students of Saroj Nalini Primary school following the local traders’ body set up the public urinal attached to the school periphery. There was initial protest; however, the traders did not care.

The urinal was built in most unscientific manner creating an unhealthy atmosphere, said head teacher Ansarul Haq. No soak pit was constructed for the urinal for which the urine flows along the boundary making problems for the students even to enter the school campus, Haq alleged. Nevertheless, the students are compelled to digest it.

On several occasion the school authority has appealed to the local authority, primary education council to remove the public urinal. They even appealed the traders’ body that set up the urinal to remove it from the spot for sake of the children. However, they refused to make any response. In fact, so far no one came to rescue the students from this peculiar unhealthy state.

The most appalling fact is that the students are being regularly forced to eat the mid day meal cooked under most unhealthy set up amidst stink of urine. However, due to paucity of space, the school authority could not shift the kitchen.

We were hopeful that the administration would be sincere enough on the issue to remove or shift the urinal, Mr. Haq said. But, nothing has happened so far.

He further said: “A fear has engulfed us about the possible illness of the students following consuming the mid day meal which is being prepared under most unhygienic condition.”

Finding no way the school authority has finally appealed to District Magistrate Nadia to intervene into the matter so that the public urinal is shifted in other place for sake of the students.

Mohonpur, Dec. 23: While the top leaders of Congress and Trinamul Congress have been planning for joint endeavor to end the left rule in the state, the crumbling face of the alliance becoming more and more obvious at the lower level.

In an incident which might the embarrass the leaders of the two parties, the students with their respective allegiance clashed a pitched battle at the hostel compounds of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswabidyala in Mohonpur late on Monday night.

At least five students with allegiance to Chatra Parishad were injured when they were allegedly beaten up by the members of Trinamul Congress Chatra Parishad. The students were admitted to local hospital, however, released later.

The incident sparked tension at the BCKV campus including at the hostels.

Meanwhile, the members of Chatra Parishad has organized a sit in demonstration at the BCKV administrative campus demanding immediate action against the accused students as well as security for them.

According to sources, tension cropped up late on Monday afternoon following the Chatra Parishad opened its unit at the BCKV campus. Members of Trinamul Congress Chatra Parishad alleged that the Chatra Parishad has opened their unit splitting their organization. This led to the altercations between the two groups, which later even spread to the hostel compound.

Haringhata block Chatra Parishad president Badal Haq alleged that the Trinamul Chatra Parishad lost their cool following a large section of students of under graduates’ sections joined the Chatra Parishad. He alleged that to settle the score the Trinamul Congress members with support of some outsiders attacked the students at the hostel late in the evening. Hiralal Muikherjee, Saikat Karmakar, Bipra Thakur, Debabrata Soren, Anirban Modak, Avik Mukherjee were injured in the attack and were rushed to the hospital.

However, Nadia district Trinamul Congress Chatra Parishad president Ratna Ghosh refuted the allegations. She said that the trouble broke out only after a section of the Chatra Parishad members led by Suman Samaddar attacked their activists.

BURNT MARUTI VAN FOUND ON KALYANI EXPRESSWAY

Kalyani, Dec. 23: In a mysterious incident a Maruti Omni van was found burning late on the early hours of Tuesday morning on the Expressway near Kalyani.

A team from Kalyani police rushed to the spot. However, by then around the major parts of the vehicle was burnt out. No person was found inside the vehicle. The fire was later dowsed and the vehicle brought to the Kalyani police station.

The incident has left the local police dumbfounded as no breakthrough to the incident has so far been achieved.

Meanwhile, the sleuths have identified the owner of the vehicle scanning its registration number. However, they refused to disclose any details for sake of investigation.

Krishnaganj, Dec. 23: In a daring incident a gang of around ten armed robbers attacked the travelers in three vehicles night and looted cash and other valuables in Chowgacha - Dakatgari area under Krishnaganj – I panchayet late on Monday. At least two persons were injured in the incident, of which one was admitted to Krishnaganj block hospital. The robbers did not even spare driver of an ambulance who was returning home along with the vehicle after admitted a patient at Saktinagar hospital.

Sambhunath Moulik, one of the victims has lodged a complaint with the Krishnaganj police station soon after the incident. However, till report last came in no one has been arrested.

According to the victims, the incident occurred at around 12.30 AM on Monday night. In the first incident, an armed gang stopped the vehicle (Sumo) in which Sambhunath Moulik, a resident in Tungi area, was returning home along with family and friends from Tarapith. “They first attacked the driver with sharp weapon injuring him seriously”, Mr. Moulik said. Later they robbers loot cash, jewelries, cell phones and other valuables from the travelers.

While the gang was looting the members of the Moulik family, a lorry arrived at the spot. The robbers attacked its driver and forced him to stop the vehicle. They also loot cash from the driver and its cleaner. Meanwhile, an ambulance (WB-51/6586), which was passing through the area, was forced to stop. The gang members attacked drier of the vehicle, Subrata Dutta. He was beaten up brutally before snatching his cell phone and cash and escaped from the spot.

Meanwhile, hearing a commotion the locals gathered at the spot. Police was also informed. Nevertheless, so far no one could be arrestee.

Krishnanagar, Dec. 22: The combined force of Congress and Trinamul Congress made a clean sweep in the panchayet by-elections virtually ceasing the hope of the CPI (M) to retain some grounds, which it lost in the wave of political change in the state.

In the results announced on Tuesday for the two panchayet samities and four gram panchayets for which the elections were held on Sunday, the left front candidates not only miserably lost to the ‘jote’ candidates, but at the same time they even failed to retain the seat which won in the last occasion.

Apart from the gross embarrassment CPI (M) in particular has suffered owing to this fresh defeat, there appears to be more bad news waiting for as the party is likely to lost control over the Deuli panchayet under Chakdaha block as an outcome of their in seat No. 20 to the Trinamul Congress, which brought their tally equal to the opposition.

Meanwhile, the Congress emerged to be the major gainer winning the two panchayet samity seats as well as two gram panchayet seats.

Of the two Panchayet samity seats under Nakashipara and Ranaghat-II block, the Congress won both with comfortable margin.

In Nakashipara, Congress candidate Jyotsna Moitra defeated CPI (M) candidate from Dharmada seat by 354 votes. In Ranaghat-II Congress candidate Amal De won from Shyamnagar seat defeating CPI candidates by a comfortable margin.

Of the four gram panchayet seats Congress won in two, while Trinamul Congress and BJP bagged one each.

In Chakdaha block the Trinamul Congress candidate Abu Bakar Mandal won in seat No. 20 defeating CPI (M)’s Ansar Ali Mandal by 48 votes. The defeat reduced the CPI (M)’s strength to seven in the 20-member panchayet body presently run by it with the support of the BJP. The victory of the TMC increased its tally to five along with the Congress who has already five seats in its kitty. The leaders of Congress – TMC alliance are now contemplating to bring a no confidence motion against the CPI (M) - BJP ruled board.

In Krishnanagar-II block Congress candidates won in Sadhanpara-II panchayet and Dhubulia – I panchayet defeating the left front candidates.

Meanwhile, in a significant development the BJP bagged one seat at the Rahamatpur panchayet under Karimpur-II block.

Krishnanagar, Dec. 20: State relief and refugee rehabilitation minister Benoy Biswas appeared to be too weak to defend the wave of ‘change’ when despite his strong presence, a pro CPI (M) panel miserably lost to pro change guardians’ panel on Sunday at Bogula Purba Para high school, which is in other term called as the Minister’s own domain.

In all the six seats of the guardians’ representatives, the pro CPI (M) panel lost to the panel of combined opposition. The Minister who happens to be the head master of the school personally monitored the voting throughout the day. Nevertheless, the defeat could not be avoided as the voters apparently rejected them.

On the other hand, in a similar incident the pro CPI (M) panel also lost to the grand alliance of the combined opposition in all the six seats.

A controversy which forced the Dr. R.K.Samanta to quit the post of vice chancellor of the university seems to have cropped again. This time it has been brewing up over nomination of the present director of research Dr. S.K.Sannyal’s nomination for the post vice chancellor along with two other candidates.

A day before the Chancellor of the University – Governor Devnarid Konwar would finally select the vice chancellor, a section of the teachers and students of the state’s leading agricultural university were utterly shocked to find Dr. Sannyal as one of the contenders as he has no background of agricultural understanding.

Sources at Vice Chancellor’s office at BCKV disclosed that Dr. Sannyal never baptized in agricultural study and do not even posses a graduation degree in agriculture. He is actually a chemistry graduate with MSc.

Many researchers at BCKV raised questions about the nomination process of the BCKV’s executive council for empanelling Dr, Sannyal, whose selection as Director of Research was also reportedly regretted by the former Chancellor for similar reason. Sources said that office of the chancellor has certain reservations about selection of Dr. Sannyal as Director of Research of the University. However, Dr. Sannyal used his political clout to get through his selection for the prestigious post.

Secretary of BCKV Adhyapak Samity Srikanta Das demanded that the state government should ensure selection of the deserving candidate only leaving all political prejudice for sake of agricultural research and development in the state.

There are also two other candidates in the fray – Dr. Puranjan Das, Deputy Director of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-New Delhi and Dr. D.Konal, former Director, Department of Agriculture (Government of West Bengal).

Krishnaganj, Dec. Disqualified in the test examination, around 26 students of Majdia railbazar academy locked the school premise confining the teacher for about four hours on Friday afternoon demanding entry for the HS Examination. The teachers were released after much persuasion along with assurance from the managing committee that their grievance would be sorted out soon.

In last week, the academic council of the school decided to axe the students who failed to secure pass marks in at least three subjects. Among these there were students who secured very poor individual marks in the examination.

The situation turned violent following the results were announced. The students allegedly with the help of some local outsiders abused the teacher and even had attempted to vandalise the class room. For the past few days they had been trying to create troubles to the teachers and even harassing them.

On Friday they along with some locals came to the school and locked the entrance from outside. This continued for three hours with the students even allegedly abused the teacher.

Teacher in charge Manoj Biswas said: “These students do not at all deserve to appear in the final examination.”

He also said that in case the managing committee decided to allow these students, the teachers of the school would be feeling humiliated as this would blemish history of the school in a larger way.

IN a mysterious incident a young couple was found dead at their residence Kanainagar village under Nabadweep police station on Friday morning. Preliminary investigation suggests that the couple had committed suicide by hanging themselves with a rope form the ceiling. Police recovered their bodies and sent for post mortem. The Police recovered a suicide note from their bed room where the bodies were hanging. However, the couple held none for their suicide. In an unusual incident suspension of work for indefinite period was announced by the Nakashipara Panchayet Samity authority on Thursday evening protesting the alleged misbehavior of the block development officer with the members of the panchayet samity during a meeting convened to finalize the "Norms for proper management and monitoring of Cooked Mid-Day Meal Programme (CMDMP)”. Siksha Karmadhakshya Bijoy Chaudhuri alleged that the BDO Subol Mahajan ignored opinion of some members during discussion. Mr. Chaudhuri alleged that BDO Mr. Mahajan become furious on this proposal and even asked my authority to make a proposal on the issue. His behavior was humiliating particularly in front the school teachers who were also invited to attend the meeting, he added. Later the elected representative walked out of the meeting and appraised their grievances to the Nadia DM in a fax message. The representatives later in a meeting decided to suspend the work of the Panchayet samity until and unless the BDO repents for his behavior. Krishnanagar, Dec. 17: A top BSNL officer was held by the anti corruption wing of the CBI while allegedly accepting bribe from a contractor on Thursday afternoon in Krishnanagar.

The accused officer was identified as Sanjib Roy Chaudhuri, Chief accounts officer attached to the office of the General Manager, Krishnanagar Telecom district.

However, the CBI officials refused to divulge any details of the allegations and the other details to the media persons. However, according to information received from reliable sources a team of about ten CBI officials led by a officer of SP rank conducted the operation against the accused officer on the basis of a specific complaint of corruption and financial malpractices in connection with publication of telephone director as well as supply of optical fibre.

Sources revealed that a simultaneous raid was also conducted at the residence of the accused officer in Naihati in North 24-Parganas district. The accused officer will be produced before the court on Friday.

According to the insiders, the CBI laid a trap for the accused officer and held him as soon as he allegedly accepted a bribe amounting to Rupees four thousand. Earlier the CBI supplied the currency notes mixed with chemicals to a contractor who was engaged to formalize the trap.

After nabbing the official red handed, the CBI conducted a marathon interrogation which continued till late in the evening.

Dhubulia, Dec. 17: Humiliated by an adamant wife to have an illicit affair with one of her relatives, a youth in Dhubulia ends his life by jumping in front of a speeding train on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased youth was identified as Iqbal Rashid Mullick, 32, a grill factory owner. Body of the youth found at Dhubulia railway station on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased has left a suicide note disclosing the humiliation he suffered by his wife and in laws which include a brutal beating on Wednesday.

However, till report last came in no complaint has been lodged by the deceased’s family against the in laws for alleged abetment to commit suicide.

According to the suicide note deceased’s wife Nayantara was having an illicit affair with her brother in law for which she used to stay in her paternal house in Dangapra in Dhubulia.

On Wednesday when the deceased youth, who was resident of Battala area in Dhubulia went to his in laws office, the officials brutally beaten up him.

Ranaghat/Krishnanagar, Dec.15: A day after an undertrial escaped from a speeding police jeep in Ranaghat, the district police administration temporarily suspended a constable and a NVF personnel who were escorting him.

However, despite much initiatives, the Dhantala police so far could not re-arrest Pran Gopal Byaparai, the undertrial who went at large.

Additional SP Annappa E said: “As a preliminary action of the departmental probe the two officials have been suspended as they were responsible for the job to produce the under trial before the court.”

The two officials have been identified as constable Sunil Kumar Mitra and NVF personnel Madhusudan Biswas.

Rupali Roychoudhury, 22, a housewife was found dead under mysterious circumstances with her duptta tied around her neck at her paternal house in Kanthalberia village under Bethuadahari-I panchayet on Tuesday morning.Even though the death appeared to be a case of suicide, there were mystery and suspicion shrouded the incident. The body found in nearly a sitting stsate with the folded legs touching the floor. This shrouded the mystery further. As a result, the slueths did not ruled the case as a murder. Nakashipara police sources said that the exact reason of death could only be ascertained only after the post mortem is done for which the body was sent. STUDENTS LOCKED TEACHERS FOR FOUR HOURS

Nakashipara, Dec.14: Around 157 students Harinarayanpur janakalyan Vidyapith in Nakashipara who would appear in the next year's Madhyamik Examination locked their teachers for more than four hours on Monday afternoon protesting against the decision of the school authorities to charge Rupees one hundred extra than the scheduled amount towards the examination fees.

The teachers were released only after the school management rushed to assure the students to accept the money without the extra amount.

Contention broke out on Monday morning, when the students found that the school authority has been asking the students to pay rupees three hundred instead of schedule Rupees two hundred. On enquiry the school authority informed that the as per the decision of the managing committee rupees one hunred being charged extra to the students towards the development fee. This irked the students, most of whom belong to poor barckward community. As a protest, they put all the teachers in a room and locked it from outside.

As per the schueule the students were supposed to be charged Rupees 165 towards examination fee as decided by board, Rs.15 toeards centre charge, Rs. 10 towards work education fees and Rs. 10 towards physical education fee, the total of which comes to Rs.200.

Head teacher Sadhan Ku mar Dutta said: “We asked the students to pay the amount as per the decision of the schoo management,”

However, finding no way the students locked the teachers virtually for indefinite period.However, realizing the heat, the representative of the school managed rushed to control the situation. They assured to accept the money sans the extra charge.

Ranaghat, Dec. 14: In what could be termed as sheer embarassment to the police, an under trial in a daring attempt escaped from a running police van while it was approaching towards the additional chief judicial magistrate's court to produce him there in Ranaghat on Monday afternoon.

Kolkata/Krishnanagar, Dec.13: Nadia along with five other neighboring districts became the proud owner of the country’s first ever soil nutrient map in last week. At a time when the state has been gradually losing the productivity level, the release of the soil use map added new dimension in the history of agriculture in the state, feel the agronomists.

This unique mapping has been made possible by the expert scientists of the National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, a wing under the Indian Council for Agricultural Research.

Apart from Nadia, the soil nutrient maps of the five district Birbhum, Burdwan, Hooghly , Howrah , North 24-Parganas, has been prepared. .

Chief minister Budhdadeb Bhattacharjee released the maps on Wednesday. The making of soil use map of the entire state would be completed by June next year, the chief minister stated.

The basic objective of preparing such map is to understand the quality of soil and to get knowledge about the way to enhance quality in gaining better yields.

The entire process of mapping took two long years for which the state government incurred an expenditure of Rs.1.5 crore. The samples were collected from 1 km grid. In West Bengal a total of 76,000 samples were collected and analyzed from all over the state, an official of the state agriculture department said.

Nakashipara, Dec. 12: Fromer CPI (M) MP and party’s central committee member Mohammed Salim has alleged that creation of small states will not only make the federal structure of the country feeble, it would at the same time give fillip to similar demands of different separatists groups in the country. Blaming the Trinamul Congress for encouraging similar demands in the state, he has categorically asked Mamata Banerjee to clear her stand on this issue, particularly on the Gorkhaland issue in the state.

Mohammed Salim was speaking at rally organized by CPI (M) at A.K.High school ground in Dharamada village near Nakashipara on Saturday afternoon.

He alleged that the Trinamool had taken the Gorkha Janamukti Morcha’s (GJM) help to win the assembly by-election in Rajganj in northern West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. It was in turn supporting the Gorkhaland demand.

He alleged that the Trinamul Congress has been maintaining a double standard. At one hand its leader claiming that she would not digest another partition of Bengal conceding the demands of separate Gorkhaland, while on the hand taking their support for political gains.

He said that the CPI (M) does not support creation of smaller states and as such also not support creation of Telengana out of Andhra Pradesh.

From the past experience, we have seen that creation of smaller state has not solved the problem for which those were created, he said.

Salim also alleged Trinamul Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee for politicizing the proposal of the state government to the Ministry of Rail for a project. He said: “The state government would respond about requirement of land at Singur for the proposed project, only when the railways authority would ask for it.”

Dhubulia, Dec. 11: Asia’s largest Tuberculosis hospital – Bidhan Chandra Sanatorium located in Dhubulia remained shrouded with darkness for over thirty hours as the state power distribution company disconnected the power supply at the hospital. The reason: a staggering amount of Rs. 1.53 crore pending towards electricity charges for over 22 months which the hospital authority failed to pay.

The incident created tension in the area as local Congress and Trinamul Congress leaders gheraoed the hospital superintendant for his alleged apathy in paying the dues. The agitating party workers also blocked the NH-34 for about two hours protesting the incident, which created serious problems to the 45 patients presently admitted to the hospital. However, a team of police personnel from Dhubulia police station rushed to the spot to control the situation.

Normalcy restored only after the power supply was resumed at the hospital during the Friday afternoon following the hospital authority assured the WBSPDCLA authority to clear the dues in installments .

According to Mostafa Sheikh, one of the patients, the power supply was disconnected on Thursday morning. The patients alleged that despite absence of power supply the hospital authority did not bother to arrange for any alternative arrangement of power. It was a horrible experience as there was not even supply of drinking water, which were forced to purchase from outside paying rupees ten per bucket.

Hospital super Dr. Tarun Kanti Ghosh said: “The situation was beyond my control.” He, however, could not justify the reason for delay in paying the pending dues to the WBSPDCL authority.

WBSPDCL’ s Tehatta Divisional Engineer Dwaipayan Acharya said: “We were compelled to disconnect the power supply as we have found sheer negligence on the part of the hospital authority for paying the dues for over two years.”

DOCTOR MURDERED IN MURUTIA

Murutia, Dec.10: Dilip Biswas, 45, a quack homoeopathy practitioner was killed by unidentified assailants late on Thursday evening at Baghadanga village under Murutia police station.

According to locals the incident occured at around 8.30 PM when the victim was returning home along with some of his friends. when. The assailants who were at least four in numbers attacked and took him away to an adjacent isolated place to hack him at random. The locals, however, later rushed him to Karimpur hospital. CASE OF FORGERY LODGED AGAINST DOCTOR

Chakdaha, Dec.10: A private doctor has been accused of practicing illegally forging the registration of another doctor on Thursday. The doctor, who claimed to be holder of a degree in medicine is also attached to Desun hospital and heart institute located on EM Bypass in Kolkata.

The incident rocked the medical fraternity in the district. A complaint (No.665 of 10-12-2009) was lodged at Chakdaha police station on Thusday evening against the accused doctor identified as Mohammad Feroz Alam, who also practices at a pharmacy in Chakdaha. However, surprisingly enough despite detaining the accused doctor for interrogation the Chakdaha police virtually allowed the doctor to escape.

The callous attitude of Inspector in charge of Chakdaha police Debabrata Ojha and SDPO Dhrubajyoti De has largely embarrassed the district police administration. Taking a strong view on their alleged callousness, Additional SP Annappa E has directed the IC Chakdaha to arrest the accused doctor on the basis of complaint lodged against him by Arun Kumar Dubey, one of the patients of the doctor, under section 419 (cheating by personation), 420 (cheating), 468 (forgery for cheating), 471 (using as genuine a forged document) of IPC. Interestingly most of the clauses charged against the accused doctor are non bailable in nature, nevertheless, the callous approach of the two responsible police officers has raised questions and suspicion.

Additional SP Annappa E said: “According to the reports of the medical council the accused Dr. Alam is not the original holder of the registration number (56841) which he has been using.” He has actually using the registration number of one Dr. Joyanta Biswas, a doctor attached to Dumdum Central jail hospital, the ASP said.

According to the report of the medical council of India (MCI) has also confirmed that the same registration number is also available with different state medical councils which issued to different doctors. However, none of them issued it to anybody named Dr. Alam.

The accused doctor who claims to be an MD and Neurological specialist is also attached to Bellevue Clinic in Kolkata. However, suspicion has been raised about his degrees following the incident.

The case of alleged forgery came to light on the initiative of Benoy Bhardwaz, a scribe attached to a Bengali television news channel on the basis of initial suspicion reported by Arun Kumar Dubye, one of the patients of the accused doctor.

On Thursday he challenged Dr. Alam while he was busy practicing at one his chambers at Apex Pharmacy in Chakdaha. Initially Dr. Alam refuted the allegation and even tried to influence the local. However, a serious altercation broke out following which the Chakdaha police was informed. Dr. Alam was taken to Chakdaha police station. Mr. Bharadwaz also followed him there. However, despite showing all the necessary documents of his alleged forgery the Chakdaha police appeared to be reluctant to take any action against the doctor. Rather, the IC Chakdaha advised the accused doctor to lodge complaint against Mr. Bharadwaz and Mr. Dubey. Finding no way Mr. Bharadwaz appraised the entire incident to SP and Additional SP. It was only after Additional SP flayed them, the IC and SDPO flung into action. However, by then the doctor went at large.

Till the report last came in, the Chakdaha police could not trace out the doctor. Sources at Chakdaha PS said that a team led by IC himslef has rushed to the accused doctor’s residence in Beniapukur in Kolkata.

Body of Juthika Das, 21, who got married with Bipul Talukdar of Saguna-Anandapally late on Wednesday night, was found hanging in her bridal attire from the ceiling of her bridal chamber while the groom was found sleeping.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman committed suicide. The incident shocked the family persons as so far they could not be able to get any hint that forced her to end life.

The Haringhata police recovered the body and sent for post mortem. The police meanwhile initiated a case of unnatural death.

According to family sources, the marriage between the deceased and Bipul, a quack by profession who practices in Maharastra, was settled recently following a prolonged process of negotiations. On Wednesday the marriage was solemnized as per the Hindu rituals. However, the invitees had no idea what a bizarre episode waiting for them.

Alorani Das, mother of the deceased bride said: “After the marriage was over, the newly married couple had their dinner and went to the bridal chamber along with the others.” However, later in the night the relatives left the bridal chamber leaving the couple, she added.

Groom Bipul said: “She behaved quite normally with me. However, I had fallen asleep soon and had no idea what was there in her mind.”

However, Arun Kumar Sil, a neighbor claimed that most probably she committed suicide being unable to sustain the humiliation her parents suffered for failing to keep their commitment about giving dowry to the groom’s family.

Groom Bipul Talukdar, however, ruled out any such suggestion.

Priyalal Das, father of the bride, who owns a tailoring shop, however, refused to comment. The family has so far lodged no complaint against the groom’s family.

Additional SP Annappa E said, “We are looking into all possible aspects behind the mysterious death which appears to be a case of suicide.”

Meanwhile, the investigating officials of Haringhata police station did not rule out depression due to a failed affair of the woman as the reason behind the possible suicide.

Ranaghat, Dec.10: A prominent distributor of consumer goods in Ranaghat was found dead under mysterious circumstances inside his office chamber on Thursday morning after12 hours since he went missing.

Initial investigation conducted by the Ranaghat police revealed that the deceased trader, identified as Ratan Ghosh, 45, was most probably murdered. The deceased was a resident of Bhangrapara area in and secretary of the local Distributors’ Association in Ranaghat.

Police has recovered the body and sent for post mortem. Meanwhile, protesting the heinous incident and alleging deteriorating law and order situation in Ranaghat, the local traders’ body has called 12 hours strike on Friday. Trinamul Congress leader and chairman of Ranaghat Municipality Partha Chatterjee has alleged nexus between a section of the police officials for which the law and order situation in the town has alarmingly deteriorated in the recent past.

SDPO Ranaghat Anshuman Saha said: “The marks around her neck strongly suggest that the deceased was strangulated to death by a piece of cloth like muffler.”

Police sources said, the family members of the victim found the body inside the office room located on the GNPC Road, which was locked from outside.

Victim’s wife Kajal Ghosh, however, could not identify any suspects for having any alleged involvement into the incident. She said: “We have no knowledge about any of his possible business rivals or any sort of enmity with others.”

Family sources said, the deceased left home on Wednesday evening. However, he did not return home. The family lodged a missing diary late at night.

SDPO Anshuman Saha said: “We are looking into all possible aspects behind the incident and expect to get a breakthrough soon.”

Meanwhile, the sleuths have decided to take the help of the finger print experts and checking the call records of the victim’s cell phone.

HIDDEN BOMB WENT OFF, TWO CHILDREN INJURED

Kalyani, Dec.9: At least two children were injured when a crude bomb went of in Anandapally-Bedibhawan area near Gayeshpur on Wednesday evening. The injured children were admitted to JNM Hospital in Kalyani. Police have rushed to the area and recovered at least twenty bombs behind a grocery shop. However, so far no person was arrested in this connection.

According to sources at Kalyani police one of the victim was identified as Ranjit Kusuhara, a student of class six.

The incident occurred when the two children were tossed one of the bombs considering it to be a play item, which were hidden behind a grocery shop in the area. One of the bombs fell from one of the children’s hand and went off injuring the two children seriously.

12 HOURS KRISHNANAGAR BANDH PASSED OFF PEACEFULLY

Krishnanagar, Dec. 9: DYFI sponsored 12-hours long dawn-to-dusk Krishnanagar bandh went off peacefully on Wednesday except a few stray incidents. The bandh was virtually paralysed the normal life in the town, which was called in protest against the alleged attack on DYFI and SFI activists by the anti socials close to Trinamul Congress on last Monday.

All schools, colleges, banks, offices, shops and business establishments were closed during the bandh. Communications were also disrupted largely as the private buses were off road. However, train services were normal as the bandh supporters exempted the service from the purview of the bandh.

The bandh supporters allegedly ransacked a sweet shop in Patra market area during the early hours of bandh. Some private vehicle owners also earned the wrath of the bandh supporters early in the morning.

Khokon Bag, Cashier of Uunited Bank of India's Bethuadahari branch was arrested by Nakashipara police late on Tuesday night for his suspicious behaviour and allegedly misleading the slueths investigating the mysterious snatching of Rupees eight lakhs from the branch on December 6. The accused cashier was produced before ADSJ court in Krishnanagar and ordered police remand for ten days.
